Tuning Using the Mali Weave
The Mali Weave is a time-tested way to tune almost any tapered drum. There is only one knot to learn, practice pulling a few and you'll have it down in no time!
First, undo the bundle of rope hanging off your drum and run it through your hands to remove any kinks in it. Untie the knot at the base of the rope you just uncoiled.

Step One
Now, run the rope under under the next two veritcal ropes, snugging it down with a downward pull towards the base of your drum. Always pulling in a downward direction keeps the rows nice and straight.

Step 2
Now that you've gone under two, go back over one rope and under the rope you started on. It should look like it does in the picture. "under, under, over, under" is the sequence to remember.

Step 3
Now is the physical part. I like to put the drum on it's side on a soft surface, and brace the base with my leg, and hold the bearing edge with my left hand. Using a cleat gripped onto your rope, pull hard straight down and the knot will "snap" into place. If you don't have a cleat, you can wrap the rope around your hand or a dowel for better leverage.

Step 4
That's it! Holding your new knot in place with some pressure from your thumb, start the sequence again by running the rope under the next two vertical cords. Once you've snugged that down, your first knot should hold on it's own and you can release your thumb. Try the drum to see if it needs another knot or two. If it doesn't, tie a knot to any horizontal spot in the rows beneath so your work doesn't come undone, and coil the rope again so it doesn't get in the way. Happy Drumming!
